Hard Water Spots on Dishes: Why They Show Up and What Stops Them
Hard water spots on dishes come from the minerals in your water. Montana State University Extension lists spotting on glasses as one of the effects of hard water. The same water needs more soap to make a good lather. A softener trades the hardness minerals for another ion, so the water stops leaving those marks.
What those spots actually are
You washed the glass. The glass is clean. It still looks like you did not wash it.
Montana State University Extension names it plainly. It says hard water can cause spotting on glasses, deposits in hot water heaters, and scaling on sinks and fixtures.
So the spots are not a sign of a bad wash. They are minerals left behind after the water dried.
That also tells you where else to look. The same water is doing something inside your heater and on your fixtures.
Why hard water beats your soap
There is a good reason the word hard got attached to this water in the first place.
Montana State says hard water received that name because it requires more soap for a good lather. The extension puts it in four words. The water is hard to clean with.
Read that as a cost line. That means more soap per load, every load, forever.
People often blame the dishwasher or the detergent first. It is worth checking the water before you buy a new machine.
The number that settles it
Hard is not a feeling. It is a range with numbers on it.
Montana State gives the classification table. Water at 0 to 3.5 grains per gallon is soft, which is 0 to 60 mg/L. Water at 3.6 to 7.0 grains per gallon is moderately hard, which is 61 to 120 mg/L.
Water at 7.1 to 17.5 grains per gallon is hard, which is 121 to 300 mg/L. Anything over 17.5 grains per gallon is very hard, which is over 300 mg/L.

Grains, ppm and mg/L in plain words
Test kits and water reports do not agree on units, and that trips people up.
Montana State clears it up. Hardness can be reported in milligrams per liter, and mg/L is the same thing as parts per million. It can also be reported in grains per gallon.
The bridge between the two is one number. One grain equals 17.1 mg/L.
So you can move between the two with one step. Divide a mg/L reading by 17.1 and you have grains per gallon.
Where the honest blank sits
You will see pages that say spots start at a certain grain count. We did not find that number in a source we trust.
Montana State lists spotting as an effect of hard water. It does not attach spotting to a line on its own classification table.
So we are not going to name the grain count where spots begin. What we can tell you is which row your water sits in. Spotting is a known effect of hard water.
While we are being honest about words, our source names spotting on glasses. It does not use the phrase cloudy glasses, and it does not talk about stiff laundry. It names the soap problem sitting under both.

What a softener actually does about it
A softener does not filter the minerals out the way a screen catches sand.
Montana State describes the real mechanism. Water softeners exchange calcium and magnesium with another ion, one that does not add hardness. Traditionally that ion is sodium.
That is a trade, not a removal. It matters, because the trade is what people mean when they ask whether softened water tastes salty or adds sodium.
The result at the sink is the part you care about. Take out the minerals that leave the marks, and the marks stop.
One appliance, or the whole house
You have two ways to spend money here, and they are not the same size.
Montana State says it is possible to install a water softener on a washing machine or dishwasher. It also notes that some new dishwashers come with a water softener built in.
The other route is the whole house. The extension says a whole-house system can be installed to treat the water for the entire home.
The single-appliance route fixes the glasses. The whole-house route also covers the heater, the fixtures and the laundry. Your hardness number and your budget decide which one is worth it.
