Magnetic Water Descaler: What Two Independent Tests Found
A magnetic water descaler is sold as a no-salt way to stop scale. The two independent tests we can cite do not agree. One is a report from a national lab. It found no benefit from the device it tested. The other is a study run under a German test protocol. It found that magnetic treatment cut scale by about half. Here are both results, with the source on each.
What the device is supposed to do
Scale is the crust that forms when hard water meets heat and pressure.
The lab report explains the problem it was aimed at. At that site, air stripping took chemicals out of the water. That step raises the water pH. The higher pH makes calcium carbonate settle out down the line as calcite scale.
That is the exact problem these devices are marketed to prevent. There is no salt, no tank and no drain line. You clamp it on the pipe and the scale is supposed to stop.
It is a nice promise. The question is what happens when someone measures it.
Test one: the national lab found no benefit
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ran a test. It used its own water plant. The report sits in the Department of Energy archive.
The team put groundwater through a magnetic device. It sat ahead of the air stripping step. The unit was a Descal-A-Matic, made in Norfolk, VA. The report lists four authors at the lab.
Then they compared the results three ways. One run used the magnetic device. One run used no treatment at all. One run used a chemical treatment with polyphosphate.
The report's conclusion is one sentence long. No beneficial effect was found when using the magnetic device.
That is a hard finding, and we are not going to soften it. It is also one device, at one facility, in one test.
Test two: the protocol study found about half the scale gone
The second test came from a different direction.
The WateReuse Research Foundation paid for a study. It looked at alternatives to home softeners. It used a German test protocol called DVGW-W512.
That study did not come up empty. It calls the method electromagnetic treatment. It says that treatment cut scale by about 50 percent. It found the same for a second method. The study calls that one electrically induced precipitation.
That is a real cut. It is also less than the salt-free media in the same study. That media cut scale by more than 88 percent.
So one study says no benefit. The other says about half the scale was gone. Both are independent of the sellers, and both are on this page for that reason.
The scale that formed was a different kind
There is a second finding in that study, and it is easy to miss.
The scale left after that treatment was soft. The study says it was easily removed by brushing.
With no treatment, the scale was hard calcite. That kind needed an acid wash to get off.
So the magnetic route may change what the scale is like. It may not only change how much of it there is. Soft scale you can brush off is a different chore from an acid wash.
Why the two results do not cancel out
It is tempting to average two studies and move on. That would be lazy. Here is the honest read.
The lab tested one named commercial unit at one facility. That is not a test of every magnetic device ever sold.
The protocol study tested a technology under a set method. That is not a promise about the unit in your cart.
They also measured in different places. The water was not the same. The gear was not the same. Two careful tests can disagree without either one lying.
We are not going to pick a winner for you. You now have both findings, with the study named on each, which is more than most pages will give you.
What neither study says
Here is the line that matters if you are choosing between this and a softener.
Neither study reports a magnetic device taking calcium and magnesium out of the water. Less scale and less hardness are two different measurements.
If your goal is less scale, the studies above are the evidence you have, and they disagree.
If your goal is water without the hardness minerals in it, a magnetic descaler is not the tool people mean by that.
What we could not check
We looked for more than two tests, and we came up short.
An Army Corps of Engineers lab study on magnetic water treatment was not readable this run. A 2024 journal article on the same fight was found, but we did not read it.
