Rent a Water Softener: Real Monthly Prices and What Is Included

Renting a water softener means a monthly payment instead of a purchase. Two real companies show the range. In Texas, Texas Water Softeners lists rentals starting at $49.95 a month plus tax. In Ontario, Kent Water lists rentals starting at $29.99 a month. Both say repairs are included. The cost guide Fixr puts rentals at $25 to $50 a month, which brackets both of them.

Three sources give a price here, and they agree with each other.

Texas Water Softeners, which serves San Antonio and New Braunfels, says its rentals start at $49.95 a month plus tax.

Kent Water, in Ontario, Canada, says its rental prices start at $29.99 a month. Each company publishes its price in its own currency.

Fixr, which is a cost guide rather than a rental company, puts water softener rental at $25 to $50 a month.

Two real companies and one guide land in the same band. That is about as solid as a price range gets on the internet.

This is the part that makes renting worth thinking about, and it is easy to skip past.

Both companies say repairs are included. Texas Water Softeners says repairs are included in the rental agreement at no extra cost. Kent Water says regular maintenance and repairs are included.

Kent Water goes further on the front end. It says it gives free professional installation with all of its rental plans.

So the monthly figure is not just rent on a tank. It is the tank, plus the service calls, plus in one case the install. When you own the unit, every one of those is a separate bill with your name on it.

That matters more than the price does for some readers. A month to month term means you can stop. If the water improves, if you move, if the house sells, you are not carrying a contract you cannot use.

Kent Water does not publish a term on the page we read, so ask that question directly before you sign anything.

The term is the first thing to check on any rental quote. A low monthly figure attached to a long lock-in is not the same product as the same figure you can cancel.

This is where rentals get interesting, and both companies address it in writing.

Texas Water Softeners covers it in one line. When it is time to move, it will either remove the unit for an extra fee, or move it to your new location.

Kent Water says it offers a relocation service, and that moving and deinstallation fees apply.

Read both of those carefully. Neither company says the move is free. Both say there is a way to handle it, and both say a fee is attached.

That is still a lot simpler than what an owner faces. A softener you own is plumbed into a house you are selling. You either leave it behind, or you pay someone to take it out and put it back in somewhere else.

If you rent and you move often, ask for the moving fee in writing before you commit. It is the one number rental pages tend to leave vague.

Rent when you are not sure how long you will be there. That covers a short stay, a house you might sell, or a job that could move you.

Rent when a repair bill would hurt. If a broken control valve would be a problem this month, a plan that includes repairs is buying you something real.

Rent when you want it working this week without a project. One of the two companies includes the install in the plan.

Buy when the house is yours and you plan to stay. A monthly payment does not stop, and the tank in the basement stays the company's property.

The obvious question is how many months of rent equals the price of buying one.

We are not going to answer it, because neither rental company publishes the purchase price of the unit it rents you. Any break-even month we printed would be a guess dressed up as math.

What you can do is honest and quick. Take the monthly rent you have been quoted. Put it next to the price of a unit you would own outright. Then decide how many years you expect to be in that house.

That comparison is yours to run, with your quote and your plans. It beats a number we invented for an average reader who does not exist.

Ask what the term is, and whether you can cancel monthly.

Ask what a repair actually covers, and whether labor is in the price.

Ask whether the install is included, or billed separately.

Ask what happens when you move, and get the fee as a number rather than a word.

Ask who owns the unit at the end. On a rental, the answer is normally the company, and it is better to hear that now than in year six.
