Scale Buildup in Pipes: What It Costs and What the Evidence Shows

Scale buildup in pipes starts with heat. The USGS says that heating hard water in a home water heater can form solid deposits of calcium carbonate. That scale can cut the life of equipment and clog pipes. It can also raise the cost of heating water and lower the efficiency of electric water heaters. The one efficiency number we can cite comes from a study run in 1986. It is smaller than you might expect.

Where the crust comes from

Hard water carries calcium and magnesium. Heat takes them out of the water and leaves them on the metal.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension puts it in one line. Those mineral ions cause scale buildup in plumbing, fixtures and appliances. They also affect how well those things work.

The extension is more specific about the water heater. Heat pulls calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate out of the water, and the result is scale buildup.

So scale is not dirt and it is not neglect. It is what happens when hard water meets a hot surface. The hotter the surface, the faster it builds.

What it costs you inside the water heater

The heater is where the money leaks, and three sources agree on the shape of it.

The Nebraska extension says scale in a water heater can slow the heating. It says that raises energy use. There is the line from your water to your bill.

Penn State Extension makes the durability point. Scales can build up on hot water heaters and decrease their useful life.

The USGS puts both together. Scale can cut the life of equipment. It can raise the cost of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters and clog pipes.

Those are three sources describing an effect. None of them attaches a dollar figure to your house, and neither will we.

The one number worth quoting, with its date on it

There is a real measurement here, and it deserves its full context.

A 1986 study by the Battelle Columbus Division ran water heaters at two test sites. The U.S. Department of Energy holds the record of it. The team built up 60 lbs of scale, which is 27 kg. They called that load an estimated 20 years of buildup.

After all that, the efficiency of the gas water heaters declined about 5%. The efficiency of the electric water heaters stayed constant.

Read that twice, because it cuts both ways. Twenty years of scale cost the gas heaters about 5% in efficiency. That is a real loss, and it is a long way from the ruin that some pages describe.

The date matters too. This is a study from 1986, run under its own test conditions. It is the only efficiency figure we found that we can cite. Treat it as one careful measurement, not as a law of nature.

The electric heaters did not get off free

Holding efficiency is not the same as being fine.

In the electric heaters, the scale made the heating element fail. It failed from time to time. The efficiency number stayed flat while the parts kept failing.

In the gas heaters, the scale made the tank metal near the burner run hotter than it should.

So the damage showed up in two different ways in two different machines. Efficiency is one measure of harm. Broken parts are another, and a bill for a new element does not care about a percentage.

Treated water changed the result in that test

The same study did not only measure damage. It measured what treatment did about it.

Treated water reduced scale buildup. It also tended to reduce rust on the metal test pieces in hot water. Three kinds of treated water did it. One was softened water. One was softened water with polyphosphate. One was hard water with polyphosphate.

That is a controlled test showing softening working on the mechanism, in the place where scale costs the most.

It is also, again, one study from 1986. We would rather give you one solid citation than five vague ones.

Dishwashers, washers and taps

This is where we run out of numbers, so here is exactly what exists.

The Water Quality Association describes a newer Battelle study on its own web page. Battelle tested 30 water heaters over a 90 day period. The association supplied them, and it approved the test plan. The same work looked at what hardness does to taps, low flow shower heads, dishwashers and laundry washers.

We can tell you that study happened. We cannot tell you what it found. The results sit inside a download we did not read, and the association funded the work, which is worth knowing when the numbers do surface.

We also found no source giving a percentage for how much scale narrows a pipe. We found no figure for how many years scale takes off an appliance. Those numbers get quoted a lot. We could not source them, so they are not here.
