Iron Water Softener or Iron Filter: What Well Water Needs
An iron water softener is a normal softener doing a side job. It can trade a little iron for sodium along with the hardness. Penn State Extension puts the cutoff at dissolved iron under 5 milligrams per liter. Above that number, or when the iron is already rusty in the glass, you need a filter instead.
What the stains are telling you
Orange or brown stains in the sink point at iron. Black stains point at manganese. A rotten egg smell points at hydrogen sulfide.
The EPA sets a guideline of 0.3 milligrams per liter for iron and 0.05 for manganese. It calls the effects above those levels rusty color, sediment, metallic taste and orange staining. These are guidelines about taste, color and stains. They are not health limits, and the EPA does not enforce them.
On a well, nobody enforces anything. Penn State says private water systems that serve one home are not subject to state or federal drinking water standards. The testing is your job.
The glass test that picks the machine
Run a glass of water and let it sit.
If the water is clear at first and turns orange or brown later, the iron is dissolved. Penn State calls this the reduced form. If you see solid bits right away, the iron is already oxidized.
That difference decides the machine. A softener can only hold dissolved iron. Penn State says oxidized iron will foul the resin bed, and that using the bed as a filter is not recommended. It can damage the resin and force much more backwashing.
So get a lab test first. Ask for iron, manganese, hardness and pH on the same report.
When an iron water softener is enough
Penn State gives three conditions for using a softener on iron. The pH is above 6.7. The hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon. The dissolved iron is under 5 milligrams per liter.
Inside those limits, the softener trades the metals for sodium. It does that the same way it trades calcium and magnesium. The metals leave in the cleaning cycle.
One more rule comes with it. The raw water must not meet air or chlorine before it reaches the softener. Air turns the iron solid, and solid iron ruins the resin.
The top scored unit in our own table is a well water softener at $947 with 64,000 grains. The next one up is $1,327 with 32,000 grains.
When you need a filter instead
Past those cutoffs, a softener is the wrong tool.
Say your iron and manganese add up to 3 to 10 milligrams per liter. Penn State says an oxidizing filter is the usual answer there. Greensand is the common filter media. It is treated with potassium permanganate, which is a poison you have to store and handle with care. The unit needs backwashing too.
What if the two add up to more than 10 milligrams per liter? Penn State says the best treatment is oxidation and then filtration. That means a chemical feed pump, a mixing tank for contact time, and a filter. It is real equipment with real upkeep.
Both of those go before the softener in the pipe, not after it.
The rotten egg smell
Check the hot tap and the cold tap.
If only the hot water smells, the water heater is making the gas. Penn State says the magnesium rod inside the heater often acts as the catalyst. Swapping that rod for an aluminum one should end the smell and still protect the tank from rust. Pulling the rod and leaving it out is the wrong move, because the tank then corrodes faster.
If both taps smell, treat the water. Penn State says an oxidizing filter can remove up to 2 to 3 milligrams per liter of hydrogen sulfide. Above 6.0 milligrams per liter, it points to chlorination and filtration.
Two things are worth knowing before you spend. Most people can smell hydrogen sulfide well below 0.5 milligrams per liter, so a strong smell is not proof of a big number. And there is no drinking water standard for it, because the smell arrives long before any harm does.
The order matters
Iron and sulfur equipment goes first. The softener goes last.
Water enters the house, hits the filter that takes out the metals, and only then reaches the resin. Get that order backwards and you buy a softener twice.
What to do next
Four steps, and the first one is not shopping.
Step one is the test. Ask a state accredited lab for iron, manganese, hardness and pH on one report. Those four numbers pick your equipment between them, and no salesperson can pick it without them.
Step two is the glass test at home while you wait. Clear water that goes orange later means dissolved iron. Bits in the glass right away mean the iron is already solid.
Step three is the comparison. A softener can carry the iron inside three limits. The dissolved iron stays under 5 milligrams per liter. The pH sits above 6.7. The hardness runs 3 to 20 grains per gallon. Outside those limits, you are buying a filter.
Step four is the order. If you need both, the filter goes in first and the softener goes in second. Tell the installer that before the pipe is cut, not after.
One more note on the test itself. Penn State says a private well is not covered by state or federal drinking water standards. Nobody is testing your water but you.
