That is a wide range, and the reason is in the same source. Fixr says a combo is a much bigger job than installing just a softener.

So treat the low end as a simple install and the high end as a complicated one. Your house decides where you land, and only a local quote settles it.

The maker explains its own build, and it is easier to picture than you would think.

That page says a carbon filter bed sits on top. The carbon bed removes chlorine, chloramine, chemicals and odors. Below it sits a softening resin bed, and that bed removes the hardness minerals that cause scale.

So the water meets the filter first and the softener second, inside one tank.

The maker also makes a space claim about that design. It says most premium systems need a two-tank softener and carbon filter combo plus a brine tank to do what its one-tank unit does. That is the maker's own comparison, not ours, and we are printing it as theirs.

Sometimes the second job is not taste. It is iron, and iron has a number attached.

Get your water tested and compare it against those two numbers. That result is what tells you whether an iron filter belongs in your plan at all.
